Mergers and Restructurings

Since the 21st century, SAIC MOTOR had succeeded in implementing a series of overseas merging and restructuring strategies in response to the challenge of entering WTO, and kept expanding and advancing.

Going out of Shanghai and trams-regional expansion

In Yizheng——Jan. 1999, Yizheng Automobile Co., Ltd of SAIC was established in Yizheng, Jiangsu province, and SAIC MOTOR made the first step towards trans-regional development.

In Liuzhou——Nov. 18, 2002, SAIC GM Wuling Automobile Company Limited was jointly established by SAIC MOTOR, GM China, and Liuzhou Wuling Motors Company Limited, and a new model of Sino- Sino-foreign Cooperation in the field of vehicles manufacture was created. SAIC GM Wuling Automobile Company Limited has become the biggest manufacturing base of mini automobles in China.

In Yantai——Dec. 20, 2002, SAIC MOTOR, GM China and Shanghai GM jointly established by acquiring the Shanghai GM Dong Yue Motors Company Limited.

In Shenyang ——SAIC MOTOR, GM China and Shanghai GM jointly reorganized China Jinbei GM Automotive Co., Ltd., and Shanghai GM (Shenyang) NORSOM Motors Company Limited was established.

In Beijing ——June 8, 2004, SAIC MOTOR reorganized China National Automotive Industry Corporation and established Shanghai Automotive Group (Beijing) Co., Ltd.

In Qingdao——June 2, 2005, SAIC GM Wuling Automobile Co., Ltd. Qingdao Branch was established.

In Chongqing——June 15, 2007, SAIC MOTOR, IVECO and Chongqing Hongyan Motor Co., Ltd jointly established SAIC-IVECO HONGYAN Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd.

In Nanjing——Dec. 26, 2007, SAIC MOTOR started full cooperation with Nanjing Yuejin Motor (Group) Corporation, which was a milestone in implementing the strategic reorganization of Chinese automotive industry.

Shanghai Volkswagen Nanjing Branch was established.on April 18,2008.

SAIC Motor Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd Wu Xi branch held the opening ceremony on May 25, 2011.

On January 6, 2012, Shanghai Volkswagen-Zhejiang (Ningbo) project signing ceremony was held in Hangzhou.

On May 28, 2012, Shanghai Volkswagen Xinjiang project signing ceremony was held.

On June 6, 2012, the Wuhan Branch of Shanghai General Motors held a groundbreaking ceremony.

On July 26, 2012, Yizheng Branch of Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd. held a commissioning ceremony.

On May 16, 2013, a ceremony was held to start construction of Shanghai Volkswagen Automotive Co., Ltd. Hunan (Changsha) Project.

Going overseas and operating internationally

Set up companies as overseas bases successively in Germany, America, Japan, Korea and Hongkong of China.

In October 2002, SAIC became a shareholder of GM Daewoo and held 10% of share of it. This was the first time for Chinese automotive capital to be involved in the restructuring of international automotive industry.

In December 2012, SAIC Motor signed a deal with Thailand's Charoen Pokphand Group to set up a joint venture aiming to expand its presence in ASEAN and overseas markets.
